The Rope Bridge Conundrum

I feel this topic is genuinely one of the realest things you will honestly read today.

I’ve had hundreds of people tell me it has helped them…mentally and physically…for progressive positive betterment…in real life…on the front line of what I do for a living.

It has also helped me overcome so many obstacles over the years…many that I made for myself.

As a Soft Tissue Specialist…Movement Analyst…and Elite Performance Coach…who runs his own clinic fixing “broken people”…and working with professional athletes amongst many other demographics…I find…that…I probably talk about this every single day of my life.

I call it…The Rope Bridge Conundrum.

To me it is the true representation of logic and probability…two of the most important commodities of thought.

Here goes…

Close your eyes…you are on a huge cliff edge…thousands of feet in the air…you need to get to the other side…and you are just stood there…still…faced with…and looking at a rope bridge…between a gaping chasm you need to cross.

You analyse it…

It’s old…it looks like it has been there for hundreds of years…it’s dirty…wet…slack…frayed…torn…moldy and withered.

There is no chance of survival if it snaps while you cross.

Do you walk it to get to the other side or do you find another way? Think about it………….

I must have asked this question a thousand times…and I can tell you that when described like that…regardless of the front some of us put up…in 99% of instances…people tell me they aren’t crossing that bridge…in any way shape or form.

The reason so many say no and refuse to cross…is because logic and probability kick in and prevail.

Now…just because the bridge looks like it could/is blatantly going to snap if we step on it…doesn’t mean that it actually will?

It may actually be the easiest and the best option to chance it…you may be able to sprint back and forth over it a hundred times without a single problem…it may stand sturdy for another hundred years…taking person after person on it…who knows?

That’s the point…I’ve given you a life or death scenario that we don’t know the answer to.

You can’t prove me right…or wrong…you can only give me your interpretation through assessment…and I can only give you mine…so who really knows?

You don’t…I don’t…but we are now in a situation where we have to make our own informed decision…based off of our own judgement.

Fate and destiny are now in the hands of ourselves.

We are responsible for our own thoughts…our own actions…and those actions have positive or negative consequences.

Your bridge…your surroundings…won’t even be the same as mine.

We see our own…our visualisations…create altered perception.

It’s not even about the crossing or not in the first place…it’s all about the worth in it.

It’s about going against logic…with logic!?

No matter how much you want to believe in that bridge…no matter how reliable you want that bridge to be…critically…with the information you have gathered…if you took the time…the effort…and the due diligence to question…to be honest to yourself and to assess from my description…then you already know the odds…deep down.

If you can look in the mirror…at yourself…in your own eyes…and feel in your heart that the 1% chance is enough to step across…then suit up. (Unless during that process of review and questioning you found a better more prosperous way to get the same job done)

If that 99% overrides though…then there’s other options out there…the world continues turning none the less.

Don’t put what you don’t care enough about…down to fate.

If you know the odds aren’t looking good…and the one percent chance isn’t enough when contemplating the degree of affect it will have on your life…then you don’t go anywhere near it…you turn your back on it and you find another way…one that fits for you…no drama…no tears.

Ask any employee at a casino…the majority of time…house wins.

Analyse the specifics.

I’m not for one solitary single second saying to not take risks…or ever go against the odds…because if you know me…then you know that’s exactly how I actually live myself…exactly what I believe in… but…I’ve learnt to be more aware as I’ve got older.

Not just more aware…but more affirmative and decisive.

What I’m saying is that…you know…you…who you are…and where you want to go.

Not me…not him…her…or them.

It’s about opening your mind and your heart.

Sounds cheesy…but it’s true…so true it’s unreal.

There are situations in life where some things just aren’t worth the risk…or aren’t worth losing…missing out on…wrecking…regretting…believing or following…and those things were always apparent from the very very start…all they needed were analysis…honesty…probability…and logic.

There are situations where…some things just are worth the risk…but they need exactly the same analytic thought process to find.

Apply this to yourself…if you are a person seeking motivation…there are many “Rope bridges” we are faced with on a daily basis…not all with a peril so serious as death…not all so apparent…not all so similar in situation…but all rope bridges still the same.

Sometimes it takes a comparison of the most extreme of situations to show how important some of the decisions we make in life are…or can be.

So next time you are faced with something you don’t know to believe or not…and you don’t know which way to go then…take yourself to the edge…visualise it…analyse the factors…the truths…the maths…and ask yourself…what does my bridge look like…do I want to cross?

Next time you tell yourself it’s for the best…or for the worse…or you tell yourself it’s the right move…the wrong move…who you are…who you aren’t…can you apply a high enough level of honesty…logic…and probability to those statements to go forth or walk away?

A million and one different people will always tell you its safe…or unsafe…but they have never stood on the edge of your cliff…staring at your bridge…only you can tell me that.

What starts off as a calculated risk…sometimes…manifests into a complete leap of faith.
